I was just reading your situation Robin, isn't that odd how the roll reverses like that. My friends, all of whom smoke, have no problem littering anything when I'm not around but when ever I'm around non of them will even toss a cigarette butt in front of me (which is a great thing) but I always get the "litter nazi" comments with the rolling of the eyes, like I'm some sort of bad guy cop or something, I love that they respect me and my ways enough to take action (when I'm around) but I hate the way they make it clear that I inconvenience them in some odd way for not throwing thier trash out of a car window or just directly onto the ground. I have found (1) as a way to get back at them for the "litter nazi" comments and (2) just because it's the right thing to do, for all of thier birthday's I do nothing more than get them nice BIG trashcans just for recycling for thier kitchens and when I visit I make a point to check on thier efforts. (if I get a nickname, I'll at least really earn it LOL)

many thanks for your comments, earthday 78. I live in a small (10 unit) coop, and after we put up a sign "Dear Neighbors, If you are enjoying a smoke, please don't forget an ashtray". Because there is only one smoker in the building, we were chastised via email by the entire building for "pointing a finger" at this smoker. Most say they think the butts are coming from the roof; I think it's impossible for a light cigarette butt to always land in the same two areas all the time, unless the person is nearby. Anyway, I'm hoping that this guy will stop now, which to my mind will only make it more clear that he was the one doing it. I'm trying to find information to verify that, but I don't know a physisist (don't even know how to spell it!). And I don't think anyone would believe it anyway since now he's the "good neighbor" and we are the "bad neighbors". Needless to say it's a very uncomfortable position to be in. thanks for listening.

Robin, personally if it was me a sign pointing in that direction saying "we don't want your Butts"...or maybe set up a camera and verify its who you think it is, collect a bunch of cigarette butts of his, and set them at his front door, maybe a less direct approach, you can go to litterbutt.com and ask them to send the litter bug a letter asking him to stop, anonymously....i made a sign saying stop littering butts out of cigarette butts, it seemed to get the message across. Tell me how things turn out...It is a great scenario needed for debate, thanks for your input, Robin..Hope to see you on board!!
