Alaska to Argenina: cycling for a new vision

Joseph Teipel

The human-powered journey called Revolution will begin in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and 18 months later will end in Patagonia, Argentina. Revolution will be the mechanism through with Joseph and his co-founder Eric, using bicycles as their sole means of transportation will conduct research into how communities are being affected by global warming, resource depletion, and extreme poverty; document successful ideas and implementations of sustainable technology and practices; and spread their message of how to create solutions.

This message is based upon what they see as the root cause that is spreading these awful issues around the globe. The root cause is a break-down in human relationships, on a societal level, both towards other humans, and towards the environment. This breakdown has continued to widen the gap between cultures, their way of life, and how they depend on and respect (or don’t), the environment. As a dwindling base of natural resources meets rising global temperatures and a massive and unsustainable population, change is urgently needed on a large scale.

This change needs to address the root cause of the problems. The Revolution Campaign is an effort to raise awareness about a new way of thinking about how we interact with each other and the environment, as well as document communities’ stories along the way in a way which will create a human connection the issues which until now have been scientific and cold.

Their message proclaims that as long as humans are put second on the priority list to economic growth, we will all suffer in the long run; that as long as we continue to run down the Earth’s sparse resources without regard for how we use them, we will come to a point where we are unpleasantly forced to change quickly; that as long as the ‘developing’ nations of the planet are constantly pushed aside for the good of the Western economy, we will never have peace; and that our children and grandchildren are about to inherit a world full of waste and mistakes carelessly created by us and previous generations and have to deal with it. The message is not one of doom and gloom however. It is a message of hope because it will highlight the power of the human mind to innovate, to create and use imagination to solve problems. As long as these creative powers are harnessed to positive and forward thinking, the possibilities are endless.
